Chairman’s Notes – March 2020

Hello Everyone,
Last month’s newsletter carried an advance notice of the U3A National Day across the land on Wednesday 3rd June. This is to celebrate 40 years since the inception of the U3A movement in this country. We will be holding our own celebrations on the day and
showcasing the groups and activities that we have on offer. These will be held in the Ballroom of the Arts Centre in town from noon onwards.
All other U3As are being encouraged to hold their own celebrations. Please put the date in your diaries. Details of exactly what will happen will be announced in our May
With regard to the possibilities of starting new groups in Spanish and Italian, we have been successful with the Spanish and have held an initial meeting for those interested.
Final details of the programme of events will be announced. We are still trying to find a leader for the Italian group as we fear that the original leader is sadly no longer with us, so this is work in progress at present. If anyone would like to take on the job, please do let us know.
We have however started our own table tennis group to supplement the one run by Welland U3A. We are working closely with Welland and share a number of groups.
Members of either are always welcome to attend each other’s meetings as one membership is sufficient.
Our History Group has been running since April last year and has proved to be very successful with a variety of subjects given by professional speakers. These are held on the third Thursdays of the month, and there is plenty of room for more members to come
if you can. You will not be disappointed.
Subscription renewals are due this month with the slight increase to £10 a year but still incredibly good value of course.
We would like to thank Jill Collinge for coming to our meeting last month to talk on the origins of nursery rhymes and sayings. It certainly was illuminating! You will find a full review of her talk in this newsletter. “Well I never knew that “ would sum up her subject.
Spring cannot be far away now so we hope that our many groups will be supported with renewed enthusiasm.
Thank you all for your ongoing attendance at our many meetings.
Best wishes.
Michael Crowe
